Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaning and Replacement in Albany

Mass airflow sensor (MAF) monitors and measures the amount of air flowing into the engine. Based on this information, onboard computer adjusts the amount of fuel sent into the engine, and also calculates the amount of exhaust gases the system should expect.

When the mass airflow sensor malfunctions, the computer will turn on check engine light. Black smoke coming from the exhaust is another sign that mass airflow sensor is not functioning properly, along with other symptoms like power loss, rough idling, stalling, or engine misfires.

Unfortunately most of these symptoms can occur due to problems unrelated to the mass air flow sensor, so when your vehicle exhibits these symptoms, professional vehicle inspection is a necessity.

At Adams Autoworx Albany we recommend regular cleaning of the mass airflow sensor, along with engine air filter replacement. If despite regular MAF cleaning some of the more severe symptoms occur – stalling, misfires, or power loss - professional inspection will be needed to ascertain if it is the mass air flow sensor that’s at fault, and if it is, it will need to be replaced.

Mass air flow sensor problems need to be resolved in a timely manner, otherwise they can lead to catalytic converter failure. Catalytic converter replacement is an expensive repair, thus it is best to avoid it.
